The 2023 Golden Globes will be televised for its 80th anniversary after a year’s hiatus. The Golden Globes’ return to TV is a welcome development after the event was taken off air following various allegations. The international event will be covered live and televised on NBC in January. Get the full details below.

Former Golden Globes Allegedly Lacked Inclusivity And Diversity

The 2023 Golden Globes is returning to TV after the organizers resolved many allegations against them. Reports of alleged misconduct and racism were leveled against the organization in 2022.

A Los Angeles Times investigation revealed that none of the then-87 members of the association was Black. The investigation also raised questions about the moral and ethical practices of the organization, particularly about fiscal policies.

The report also suggested that nominations could be influenced by “expensive junkets,” publicity, and noise marketing. The report also questioned the group’s charitable practices.

The organization raised $32 million in one year and grew its coffers by $15 million, giving just $5.9 million to charitable causes. Meanwhile, some of its biggest expenses were from jet-setting and partying.

Many celebrities called out the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, which decides the nominees, for its organizational issues. According to the Daily Mail, Tom Cruise also gave back his three awards in protest.

Consequently, NBC took the awards show off the air in January due to the allegations and held a private, non-televised event.

In response to the backlash, the HFPA pledged in May to transform the organization and address every issue. It promised to increase membership “with a specific focus on recruiting Black members” and to establish a committee of “racially and ethnically diverse members who will advise the Board and oversee critical organizational reform.”

True to its word, the HFPA increased its membership to 108 and currently has six Black members. Moreover, the group revised its bylaws and adopted a Code of Conduct alongside mandatory diversity, harassment, and sensitivity training for all members.

The organization added 21 members, including 48% women, 29% Black, 24% Asian, 29% Latinx, and 19% Middle Eastern/North African.

The Golden Globes’ Will Return To TV In 2023

Following the HFPA’s acknowledgment of its structural issues and reforms that accompanied it, the Golden Globes will return to TV. NBC shared in September that the award show would return in 2023 with a one-year deal rather than the usual multi-year deal.

Frances Berwick, NBC Universal Television and Streaming’s Chairman of Entertainment Networks, said in a statement at the time:

Jerrod Carmichael Will Host The 2023 Golden Globes

The organization also announced in December that Emmy-winning comedian Jerrod Carmichael would host the 80th edition of the ceremony.

“We’re so excited to have Jerrod Carmichael host the historic 80th Golden Globe Awards,” HFPA president Helen Hoehne said.

Helen praised Jerrod’s ability to provoke laughter and deep reasoning in his audience, which she considered essential for the times.

Jerrod is a stand-up comedian, actor, and filmmaker. He shot to the limelight with his sitcom, The Carmichael Show, which ran for three seasons on NBC. The comedian also hosted an episode of Saturday Night Live back in April.
