The 95th Academy Awards has many nominations and snubs. RRR, The Woman King, Decision to Leave, and Till didn’t get Best Picture nominations. The 2023 Oscars snubs bring into question if the award show is keeping up with the times. Sure, Angela Bassett was nominated for her role in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, despite the film not getting nominated for Best Picture. Gina Prince-Bythewood (The Woman King), Charlotte Wells (Aftersun), and Sarah Polley (Women Talking) didn’t get nominations for Best Director. Those directors also didn’t get recognition at the 2023 Golden Globes. It’s hard not to notice the snubs, not only at the 2023 Oscars, but previous years. Viola Davis and Danielle Deadwyler didn’t get nominated for their acting roles, despite critical acclaim. The 95th Academy Awards snubs lacked recognition of the talent in front and behind the camera. The Academy has a lot to work on.

Films like “The Woman King”, “Till”, and “Decision to Leave” Deserve Recognition

Viola Davis has been previously nominated for her excellent performances in past roles. The Woman King was unlike any role she’d ever played, and it has only added to her talents. Till was a breakout role for Danielle Deadwyler, but his role is one of many snubs for the 95th Academy Awards. Critics have applauded the film Decision to Leave, but it didn’t make the nomination list. The snubs of the 2023 Oscars once again have people scratching their heads. Why weren’t the films The Woman King, Till, and Decision to Leave part of the 95th Academy Awards snubs? Gina Prince-Bythewood, Sarah Polley, and Charlotte Wells did well with their films but fell short of nominations. Will Smith didn’t get a nomination for Emancipation, despite his well-received performance. That could be tied to his unceremonious behavior from last year.
