New details have been revealed about the plot for the upcoming mini-series Adventure Time: Distant Lands premiering on HBO Max. Apparently, one of the several specials being worked on will focus on the origins of the character Peppermint Butler.
Peppermint Butler was never a seriously important character on the original Adventure Time, though he was an interesting and mysterious one. Pep Butt – as he was sometimes called – was Princess Bubblegum’s servant and faithful right-hand man, though, in a second-life that was secret to most people, he dabbled in the dark arts and seemed to be well-acquainted with sinister magic, powerful figures, and the generally suspicious and immoral. He was even on speaking terms with Death himself. His intentions always seemed pure and good, but he always seemed to have dark secrets he would not reveal. It seems as though many of these secrets will come to be explained in the upcoming mini-series.
The original Adventure Time is regarded by many as one of the best and most important cartoons made in the past few decades, being wildly creative, experimental, and insightful as a show aimed largely at children on a mainstream television network. The show ended with its 10th season back in 2018, with the emotional and climactic series finale “Come Along With Me,” which attempted to close the book on several major plot-threads the show still had going at that point, while still leaving many minor ones unsolved. The ongoing comic book adaptation of the show continued on with the story in some capacity, though Distant Lands seems as though it will be answering some of the larger, more intriguing questions yet to be explained by the show’s original run.
Adventure Time: Distant Lands is expected to debut on HBO Max in 2020. You can watch a brief video below to get you up to speed on Peppermint Butler, in case you needed a reminder:
