Released back in October, Adventures of Chris is a quirky platformer that tells a story of a chubby underdog kid and his journey to becoming a hero. Players will meet a whole cast of colorful characters throughout the game and fight all matter of wacky and interesting enemies. The game also has some of the most challenging boss fights I have encountered and played in a while. So let’s take a look! In this review, we will see how Adventures of Chris Switch release holds up, starting with the story as always.

A Zero to Hero Comedic Adventure

The Story in Adventures of Chris is a charming premise where players take on an unlikely hero’s role. It starts with the main character Chris being teleported to Transylvania. Whereas after a sequence of events, he will be transformed and given superpowers. Then the player will embark on a journey to rescue some kids from a spell cast by a young vampire. Throughout the story, players will meet quirky characters and listen to some funny banter as well. However, the comedic elements are more or less geared more towards younger audiences, which isn’t a bad thing. The story is not the strongest in the Adventures of Chris, but it still works because it just serves as an excellent starting point for the player.

Decent controls and Pleasant Art Style

Moment and action Controls in Adventures of Chris function well and carry out their intended functions with little issue. It’s easy to perform all of the actions and attacks, and it feels great. Maneuvering the various jump puzzles also feels engaging and gratifying when you succeed.

For the most part, I didn’t have any problems with the controls except for one with the game’s dash moment controls. Trying to dash in this game was a little tricky initially, as you have to press multiple buttons. But once I got over some initial confusion, it was smooth sailing from thereon. To conclude, Adventures of Chris’s controls are decent, and in the long run, I feel players won’t have any problems with them.

In regards to visuals, they are decent enough and honestly alright in this game. I personally enjoyed many of the enemies’ designs, with my favorite being probably the killer penguins with laser guns. The game also features several different backdrops for the levels that look visually appealing. The art style, in general, is very visually pleasing with a sort of comic book aesthetic that fits the whole superhero plot.

Adventures of Chris – Balloon Action-Packed Gameplay

Now in regards to the gameplay, Adventures of Chris succeeds far more than its story. The game has many interesting mechanics and an engaging overlining progression path for the player to become stronger over time.

Players progress through various levels scattered with various enemy types and some obstacles like spikes and such. In short, it’s pretty much your standard platformer fare, but this isn’t a bad thing, as Adventures of Chris presents the player with an intriguing and refreshing take on the platformer genre.

Along with this, Adventures of Chris presents the player with a decent amount of diverse levels with some exciting enemy types and bosses. The platforming mechanics also feel engaging and satisfying to transverse in this game because of its unique balloon power mechanic.

This mechanic allows the player to blow up into a balloon and walk on ceiling platforms and really mixes the formula up a bit as usually in these types of games; you are stuck firmly on the ground. However, this balloon ability is not the only power the protagonist of the game can do. Chris can also cast a few magic spells, such as ice missiles or fireballs. These magic attack powers were fun to play around with and were extremely useful in dealing with certain bosses.

Speaking of bosses, the bosses in Adventures of Chris were often the perfect mix between challenging and enjoyable. They also had some nice variations and designs with unique attack patterns and varying levels of difficulty. However, some of the end game boss fights can have really high difficulty spikes. Whereas, some of these late-game bosses could be very difficult to dodge, with attacks that seemed almost unavoidable. Despite this, I feel the spikes in difficultly adds to making Adventures of Chris a really challenging and highly enjoyable Title that can easily capture any platformer fan’s attention.

Another notable aspect in Adventures of Chris Switch’s release is that deserves attention is that of its level design. It’s well laid out and just really satisfying to transverse; it also excellently goes hand in hand with the platforming. Each level has its own set of obstacles to test the player, so they are never left feeling bored and treading familiar ground.

The Levels also have many cool and interesting design choices, and one of these is the currency the player collects. Instead of conventional gold coins or money or something like that, it is actually floating cookies! Already this is a funny concept, but it is made even better because you can use these cookies to buy various upgrades for the character. This was a nice touch to the mix because it added a surprising grinding element to get upgrades to the game, something I never thought I would see in a platformer.

Verdict: In the end, through the combination of several of the game’s mechanics, Adventures of Chris is a decent and highly enjoyable game platformer. There’s plenty of content that is a real joy to explore and fun to play. Along with that, the game is also available for a highly affordable price compared to other games on the market. That said, if you are looking for a family-friendly title that is a highly enjoyable game for all ages, you can’t go wrong with Adventures of Chris especially the Nintendo Switch release version!
