Netflix is becoming a frontrunner in video game adaptations, but it is facing a new issue as it lost the showrunner for the Assassin’s Creed series, Jeb Stuart, as reported by Collider. The showrunner of Vikings: Valhalla cited creative differences as the team developing the show with him from L.A. to London led to a differing opinion in the direction of the adaptation of the game by developer and publisher Ubisoft.

The project is in early development, so this does not stall too much of its production, as the pieces are still being placed for what will be the second live-action adaptation of the game franchise. The announcement for the Assassin’s Creed Netflix series was originally made at Ubisoft Forward last year.

Stuart is an experienced writer across TV and movies. The best-known films he has written include Die Hard and The Fugitive. For a long time, throughout the 2010s, his writing career grew quiet. He has made quite the comeback with Vikings spinoff Valhalla and Netflix’s The Liberator.

Assassin’s Creed live-action Netflix series loses its showrunner

The upcoming show is not the first adaptation of the games. Nine years after the 2007 debut of the sci-fi, period piece hybrid turned to the big screen with the 2016 movie with Michael Fassbender. It flopped, like many video game adaptations that have come before it. It had a budget of $125 million and grossed $240 million worldwide. Since then, we have seen some successes, particularly from the streamer’s adaptation of League of Legends with Arcane and other anime ventures based on games with Cyberpunk: Edgerunners and Castlevania.

Netflix is quite busy by being the dominant force in video game adaptations on top of the Assassin’s Creed series. It is also developing a live-action movie based on Gears of War and an accompanying animated series. It is also developing an adaption of Horizon, an anime on Tomb Raider, a Bioshock film, and expansions to The Witcher with spinoffs and continuing seasons of the mainline series, which lost leading actor Henry Cavill last year.
