After a long break between movies, the second Borat saw the rise of Maria Bakalova, and she continues that success with the thriller Electra, as reported by Deadline. The Oscar-nominated star will join Daryl Wein (Something From Tiffany’s), Jack Farthing (Poldark), and Abigail Cowen (Fate: The Winx). The film has begun production in Italy.

Marking the directorial debut of Hala Matar, the film will follow a traveling journalist in Rome who is set to interview a musician. It will be filled with drama, betrayal, and murder. Wein will play the journalist named Dylan; Cowen as the journalist’s photographer, Lucy; Farthing as the musician, Mile; and Borat star Maria Bakalova as Francesca, a performance artist and girlfriend of Farthing’s character.

The film is written by Wein, Matar, and Paul Sado (A Talent for Trouble). Wein, Matar, Tomasso Bertani, Luca Cottafavi, Jordan Beckerman, and Jordan Yale Levine will produce. Elsa Ramo and Tiffany Boyle will executive produce. The film currently has no release date slated.

Borat star Maria Bakalova continues her success with the thriller Electra

Bulgarian actress Maria Bakalova found her breakout role with Borat Subsequent Moviefilm, in which she was nominated for Best Actress in a Supporting Role. Earlier this year, she was in A24’s horror-comedy Bodies Bodies Bodies with Pete Davidson, Amandla Stenberg (The Hunger Games), Chase Sui Wonders (Generation), Rachel Sennott (Shiva Baby), Myha’la Herrold (Industry), and Lee Pace (Guardians of the Galaxy). Other films include Women Do Cry, The Bubble, Transgression, and Last Call.

Electra is on a pile of projects for Borat breakout star Maria Bakalova. She will jump into Phase 5 of the MCU to play Cosmo the Spacedog in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, which will release in theaters next year on May 5. She will also star in Branded, Triumph, Fairyland, Freedom or Death, and The Honeymoon.
