Dark Winds, the 2022 thriller series available on AMC and AMC+, has officially been renewed for a second season. The series, which premiered on June 12th, 2022, features Zahn McClarnon as an executive producer and lead actor, playing Sheriff Joe Leaphorn as he struggles to untangle a complicated series of murders on Native American land.

Dark Winds, initially conceptualized over thirty years ago, is based on the Leaphorn & Chee book series by Tony Hillerman, first published in 1973. The AMC series, set in 1971 on a remote Navajo Nation reservation near Monument Valley, follows Joe Leaphorn, sheriff of the outpost’s Tribal Police, as he and deputy Jim Chee (Kiowa Gordon) are faced with a seemingly unrelated string of crimes, forcing both men to “battle the forces of evil, each other and their own personal demons on the path to salvation,” per Deadline.

Along with McClarnon and Gordon, the Dark Winds cast also includes Jessica Matten (Frontier), Deanna Allison (Edge of America), Rainn Wilson (The Office), Elva Guerra (Reservation Dogs), Jeremiah Bitsui (Better Call Saul), Eugene Brave Rock (Wonder Woman), and Noah Emmerich (The Truman Show).

What to Expect from ‘Dark Winds’ Season 2

Dark Winds season 2, though currently lacking a premiere date, will be premiering on AMC and AMC+ and has been confirmed to have a runtime of six episodes, similar to season 1. Not much is known about the cast or premise of Dark Winds season 2. However, Zahn McClarnon and Kiowa Gordon will likely return as Leaphorn and Chee, respectively, with McClarnon, Robert Redford, George R. R. Martin, and Chris Eyre serving as producers.

Regarding the series renewal, AMC Studios executive Dan McDermott told TVLine:

The second season of Dark Winds will likely be filmed on Navajo Nation lands at Tesuque Pueblo and Cochiti Pueblo, just as the first season was. There have been no announcements on when the season’s production is due to start.
