A spin-off of John Hughes’ 1986 comedy Ferris Bueller’s Day Off is in the works at Paramount. Deadline reports that the film will be titled Sam and Victor’s Day Off, and it will be created by Cobra Kai creators Jon Hurwitz, Hayden Schlossberg, and Josh Heald. The story will take place during the events of the 80s teen film, focusing on Sam and Victor, the two mechanics who Ferris leaves in charge of his friend Cameron’s Ferrari in the movie. They memorably complicate the day by taking the Ferrari for a joy ride. The previously unnamed mechanics were originally played by Richard Edson and Larry “Flash” Jenkins, both of whom passed away in 2019. No casting choices have been announced.

Paramount and Cobra Kai Creators Bring ‘Ferris Bueller’ Spin-Off

Paramount and the Cobra Kai creators have bought on Bill Posley to write the script. Posley served as Executive Story Editor on season four of Cobra Kai (which will soon release season five on Netflix). Posley recently won the SXSW Audience Award for his directorial debut Bitch Ass, a crime horror inspired by films such as Candyman.

Do Audiences Want This?

While there is talent behind this project, The AV Club shines a light on a hurdle this film will face: will audiences be interested in this film?

Reboots and remakes are coming out nonstop, but many people can’t imagine why Paramount would want a spin-off of Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, one of the most fun and feel-good movies of all time. Aside from this creative team, no one has ever asked what the mechanics were up to while Ferris, Cameron, and Sloane were on their escapades.

However, the Cobra Kai creators have brought new life to The Karate Kid franchise through their Netflix series. Time will tell if they can actually make something charming out of this premise.
