After so much time of ideas being tossed around regarding a Gears of War adaption, Netflix has sealed the deal with a movie and animated series being signed off, as reported by The Hollywood Reporter. The deal took months to come to completion after tough competition from others wanting to adapt the Xbox sci-fi franchise.

Depending on the success of this live-action movie and animated series, Gears of War on Netflix could become a major franchise beyond its standing on Xbox as a video game. No producers or directors are attached to the projects or who will play these iconic characters that gamers have become familiar with since 2006.

The games follow a group of people fighting against an alien threat that has brought the demise of civilization. The original trilogy followed a fireteam led by Marcus Fenix, with other games continuing his story with an expanded cast of allies and enemies. It has become a flagship franchise for Xbox as it has since sold over 40 million copies. The franchise has also inspired the third-person shooter genre with its cover mechanics from the original game that was released on the Xbox 360 in 2006.

The idea of a Gears of War movie came about in 2007. It has hopped around Hollywood with nothing coming to fruition.

This deal falls in a pit of video game adaptions blowing up. Recently, we have had two Sonic the Hedgehog movies, an Uncharted movie, a Cuphead series, a Cyberpunk anime series, The Witcher series, and the Tomb Raider reboot. In the making for future adaptions, we have Gran Turismo gaining speed, Bioshock, Metal Gear Solid, Super Mario Bros., and Fallout.

Gears of War has five main entries, with spinoffs. Its sixth game is currently in development at The Coalition.
