Last Night in Soho is an upcoming psychological horror movie unlike any other. With its first official teaser trailer releasing back in May, Edgar Wright’s next blockbuster has been a long time coming. Here is a breakdown of Last Night in Soho’s plot, cast, release date, reviews, and related news on everything we know so far.

What Is Last Night in Soho’s Plot?

Set in London during a mixture of 1966 and the present day, Last Night in Soho focuses on Eloise, a young woman with a passion for fashion design and a strange sixth sense. She finds herself transported back in time to 1966 London, inhabiting the body of an iconic nightclub singer named Sandie.

While in Sandie’s body, Eloise begins a romantic relationship. However, she soon realizes that Sandie’s life is not as glamorous as it appears to be. As worlds collide, both past and present begin to fall apart with horrifying consequences.

Who Is in Last Night in Soho’s Cast?

Last Night in Soho features the talents of many successful actors. Its leading ladies are Thomasin McKenzie, who plays Eloise, and Anya Taylor-Joy, who plays Sandie. Matt Smith joins the cast as a supporting character, Jack. He is the man with whom Sandie falls in love.

Thomasin McKenzie’s most notable roles include Maddox Cappa in M. Night Shyamalan’s disturbing thriller, Old (2021). She also portrayed Elsa Korr in Taika Waititi’s heartwarming war-time comedy-drama, Jojo Rabbit (2019).

Anya Taylor-Joy gained global recognition for portraying Beth Harmon in Netflix’s The Queen’s Gambit (2020). Other significant roles include starring alongside James McAvoy in Split (2016) and playing the role of Magik in Marvel’s The New Mutants (2020).

‘Last Night in Soho’ Trailer

On October 11th, Universal Pictures released Last Night in Soho’s final trailer before its release date. They captioned the video: “Are you ready for a trip into the past? From the imagination of Edgar Wright, prepare for the “dark and delicious” #LastNightInSoho in cinemas October 29.”

From the looks of its fast-paced calamity bathed in neon lights, it promises to be another cinematic spectacle that encapsulates the key elements of any self-respecting psychological horror movie. Following in the footsteps of Edgar Wright’s other renowned successes, such as Shaun of the Dead (2004), Hot Fuzz (2007), and Baby Driver (2017), it has some big shoes to fill. It also comes as a massive surprise that Wright never suggested casting Simon Pegg and Nick Frost as the starring duo.

‘Last Night in Soho’ Reviews

Several tweets from critics and early-bird viewers alike have been generally positive reviews, with collective responses urging audiences to “just go see it.” Such encouraging feedback bodes incredibly well for Last Night in Soho’s reputation thus far. Details are withheld at this time. but another viewer stated that Last Night in Soho was their “favorite film of the year.”

In Their Own League is a website and podcast dedicated to celebrating female filmmakers and other underrepresented talent working in film. They posted a review and captioned the tweet with: “In ‘Last Night in Soho,’ the sins of the past bleed into the chaos of the present to deliver something visually arresting and chillingly atmospheric.”

Another established company, The Wrap — supporters of independent journalism — tweeted their own review, captioned: “Great performances and brilliant needle-drops bolster @edgarwright’s best film since ‘Shaun of the Dead.’”

As we well know, Shaun of the Dead was a roaring success when it was released in 2004. It put a refreshing spin on the cliché zombie trope and planted its roots as an unbeatable horror/comedy classic. For Last Night in Soho to be compared to such an acclaimed feature is pretty promising.

Recently Released Special Features

Dreams really do come true, at least according to Focus Pictures. In the past few days, Focus released the full music video of Anya Taylor-Joy singing “Downtown” — the 1964 breakout hit originally sung by Petula Clark. Beautiful, talented, and musically inclined. Is there anything that Anya Taylor-Joy can’t do?

Mondo, based in Texas, are independent creators of posters, vinyl soundtracks, collectibles, games, pins, apparel, and more. They partnered with Back Lot Music, an indie record label releasing soundtracks for NBCUniversal films & TV. To celebrate the release of Last Night in Soho, they curated its stunning soundtrack in vinyl form. That exclusive soundtrack is available to pre-order now from Mondo’s website. They announced this collaboration in a tweet on October 21.

What We Know From Behind The Scenes

In a sneak-peek behind the scenes clip, Matt Smith dances with both Anya Taylor-Joy and Thomasin McKenzie in what seems to be an act of camera trickery. Since Eloise (Thomasin) and Sandie (Anya) briefly share the same experiences, audiences can conclude that Eloise will live through a portion of Sandie’s adult life. Whether Sandie is aware that Eloise is, an active participant is yet to be confirmed. Those details are left to the imagination until the full film is released.

The YouTube channel, Mayhem Mendes, posted a compilation of behind-the-scenes clips on 20 October, wherein we see Thomasin’s character shadowing Anya’s. With some perturbation surrounding her predicament, she watches Sandie’s life unfold. Such is the turmoil when Sandie is murdered. Eloise is in an era that is not her own and witnesses a murder she was not supposed to see.
