It is official that Buzz’s solo film Lightyear lands on Disney+ on August 3rd. The film was released on June 17th, just over 45 days after its theatrical release. As many streaming platforms have made the decision for theatrical releases and then go to streaming roughly after roughly 45 days, this tracks with previous decisions by the company with its films like Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.
Lightyear lands on Disney+ soon
The film will follow the origin story of the legendary character with Chris Evans voicing. It lends itself as the in-world movie that inspires the toy that the world got to know through Tim Allen’s voice in the four Toy Story movies. For people who missed out on hearing Captain America voice Buzz, they will make their judgment with the Lightyear Disney+ release. He is joined by Keke Palmer (Hustlers), Peter Sohn (Luca), Uzo Aduba (Orange Is the New Black), Dale Soules (Orange Is the New Black), and Taika Waititi.
It is the first film to arrive in theaters for Pixar since the pandemic began. Previous films—Onward, Soul, Luca, and Turning Red—in the last few years have all premiered on the streaming platform. The move to send Lightyear to Disney+ seems like the right one due to its box office performance. Being one of the more expensive films by Pixar, the film grossed $213 million worldwide. $115 million was earned domestically, with international grossing $97.8 million. A factor in its performance was its strong competition with Jurassic Park Dominion and Top Gun: Maverick pressed pressure on the animated sci-fi film.
Lightyear hits Disney+ on August 3rd. For people who are comfortable going to the movie theaters and miss seeing Pixar movies this way, the film is still available on the big screen.
