Nowadays, studios having a box office hit has become a much more lofty achievement due to the rise of streaming. Fortunately, the new horror/comedy film M3GAN is a significant success at this weekend’s box office. The film opened in second place, behind Avatar: The Way Of Water, bringing in $30,200,000. However, the new Avatar wasn’t that far ahead, with $45 million in its fourth week. Notably, it recently passed the $1 billion mark worldwide.

M3GAN is the latest entry from Universal Pictures. Gerard Johnstone directed the flick, and it’s also a collaboration with Blumhouse Productions. In addition to a vast promotional campaign, M3GAN is a huge success at the box office due to its strong reviews from both critics and moviegoers. Currently, M3GAN has a 93% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

M3GAN stars Amie Donald, Jenna Davis, Kimberly Crossman, and Allison Williams. This new film seems likely to have a decently long life in movie theaters before going digital and streaming.

Besides ‘M3GAN’ Being A Huge Hit At The Box Office

In addition to Avatar holding the number one spot and M3GAN opening strong, there isn’t much competition among theatrical releases. In its third week, Puss in Boots: The Last Wish comes in at number 3 with another domestic weekend total of $13,121,000. Columbia Pictures’ A Man Called Otto came in fourth place with $4,285,480. Rounding out the top 5 is Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. The film gained another $3,398,000, bringing its domestic total to $445,437,616. Whitney Houston: I Wanna Dance with Somebody is absent from the top 5 at the box office. In its second week, the film fell to number 6 with a little over $2 million.

M3GAN is a huge hit, which helps prove people still want to go to the theaters. A film doesn’t have to be a blockbuster, but it might become a hit if it’s got the reviews and brings something new to the table. Here’s to hoping M. Night Shyamalan’s upcoming film, Knock At The Cabin, does just this when it comes out on February 3.
