Universal has released the second trailer for M3GAN (seen below), its upcoming AI horror film that is aiming for a January 6 release date. The new footage looks at the killer robot, the mix of comedy and terror, and the robot driving a sports car wrapped with a Billie Eilish soundtrack.

The film follows a young girl, Cady (Violet McGraw), who is grieving over the loss of her family. As Gemma (Allison Williams) looks after her, she uses her engineering abilities to use a robot named M3GAN to give comfort to Cady. It starts to work to give the girl a friend and protector, but soon the AI becomes sentient and deadly for anyone in the way. The two are joined by Jenna Davis (Infinity Train), Amie Donald (Sweet Tooth), and Ronny Chieng (A Father’s Son).

The film was directed by Gerard Johnstone (The New Legend of Monkey). It was written by James Wan and Akela Cooper (Malignant), who are continuing their horror-comedy streak after the 2021 film. Wan produced with Jason Blum, Michael Clear, Couper Samuelson, and Jill Soper. Williams executive produced with Greg Gilreath, Adam Hendricks, Mark David Katchur, Judson Scott, and Ryan Turek.

Universal has been on a streak of horror successes. With the second M3GAN trailer gearing up the film for its release next month, it could keep this train moving. Lately, there have been The Black Phone from earlier this year and 2020’s The Invisible Man. Things are looking good as Wan has had experience across The Conjuring, Saw, and more. Then there are the two leads being known for their horror roles as we have Williams, who was in Get Out, and McGraw, who has starred in multiple Mike Flanagan projects, most notably The Haunting of Hill House. On top of that, the climate of the theater side of the film industry has been healthy for horror films due to the low budgets and hungry audiences.

M3GAN will hit theaters on January 6, 2023.
