Erich Bergen, star of Madam Secretary on CBS, has announced that he will star as Billy Flynn in Chicago as the musical hits the Broadway stage this fall. Bergen, who appeared on Madam Secretary from 2014 until the show’s finale in 2019, is no stranger to the stage, having reportedly starred in Waitress on Broadway in 2018 and 2019 between various television and movie roles.
Madam Secretary first premiered on CBS in September and followed CIA analyst and professor Elizabeth “Bess” Adams McCord (Téa Leoni) as she assumes the office of United States Secretary of State following the untimely death of her predecessor Vincent Marsh (Brian Stokes Mitchell). The series follows Elizabeth and her family – including her husband Henry (Tim Daly), daughters Stevie (Wallis Currie-Wood) and Allison (Kathrine Herzer), and son Jason (Evan Roe) – as she acclimates to life in the political structure of Washington D.C., first as the U.S. Secretary of State and then the first female U.S. President after President Conrad Dalton (Keith Carradine), Elizabeth’s former mentor, meets his term limit.
Erich Bergen’s History on ‘Madam Secretary’
Erich Bergen starred in Madam Secretary as Blake Moran, Elizabeth McCord’s assistant and the only member of her staff she did not inherit from the previous Secretary of State. In the fifth season of the show, Moran was fired as Elizabeth’s personal assistant, only to be rehired as her assistant policy advisor, where he followed her through her bid for the presidency. Moran would remain as a series regular until the finale of Madam Secretary in December 2019.
Some of Erich Bergen’s other on-screen roles include appearing as Paul Hoffman on the CW’s Gossip Girl (2007), Bob Gaudio in Jersey Boys (2014), and ADA Robert Jones on CBS’s Bull (2016). His upcoming role as Billy Flynn in Chicago will actually be a return to the stage since, according to The Hollywood Reporter, Bergen appeared as Dr. Jim Pottamer, the main love interest of the musical Waitress, in 2018 and reprised the role in 2019.
According to Deadline, Erich Bergen will join the cast of Chicago on August 1st, 2022, and hold the role through September 11th, 2022. The musical is currently showing in the Ambassador Theater in New York City, New York.
