The next horror film by Jordan Peele will be a spectacle, partially because of the use of IMAX cameras for Nope. Leading up to the film’s release later this month, Screen Rant got an exclusive to release a featurette highlighting what will make this the filmmaker’s most epic film to date.

What will separate Nope apart are the IMAX 15/65mm cameras, as it will make the Jordan Peele horror film the first “horror epic” to use these cameras. Shot by cinematographer Hoyte Van Hoytema, who has made a name for himself with films like Let the Right One In, Her, Dunkirk, Tenet, and the upcoming Christopher Nolan film Oppenheimer. In the featurette, Peele says how much of a fan he is and why he wanted Hoytema to shoot the film to deliver his vision.

The Use of IMAX in ‘Nope’ for the Next Horror Outing for Jordan Peele

The IMAX Nope featurette goes between clips seen in the film’s two trailers and behind-the-scenes looks at its filming. It shows the director and cinematographer talking about the process and mindset behind the decision to go to the biggest screen possible.

From the start, the director had an idea to create something bigger than he had ever done. That was where the idea came to make Nope suitable for IMAX. The additional sound quality from the sound system in the theaters and the extra screen size create a larger-than-life experience often associated with blockbuster movies in the action and superhero genres, less so for horror. When writing, he wanted to have no restraints and go all out to make something ambitious.

“I purposefully wrote something without any regard to how possible it was,” the horror filmmaker said.

The film will differ significantly from Get Out or Us as those went into another realm of fear by going into dread, violence, and ambiguity. This next one for the filmmaker will be more genre-blending than ever as it goes into action, horror, and sci-fi. Although it will be different, the trailers have shown it will have his stamp with its themes about race and society and a dash of humor to relieve the tension.

The IMAX experience for Nope arrives on July 22nd, which will also be available in traditional theatrical experiences. The film stars Daniel Kaluuya, Keke Palmer, and Steven Yeun.
