This Friday (August 5), Hulu will release Prey, a shot to the past for the iconic Predator franchise. In an interview with Polygon, Prey director Dan Trachtenberg (10 Cloverfield Lane) talked about the new, terrifying look of the Predator.

The film takes place 300 years ago, in 1719, as it follows a tribe of Native Americans who go toe-to-toe with the alien hunter, making it the first time one of the creatures had come to Earth. For the Prey director, Predator needed to be a balance of advanced and “older” for the prequel.

The Prey director certainly delivered a Predator like that. The film features a less armored creature that is more bare-bones than more recent iterations that showed a highly advanced creature slaughtering people in its way.

Prey director changes Predator more than any other iteration

For a franchise that has been around since the 80s, some new things have been done, but a lot of the same has been repeated. The director of Prey aimed for a scary hunter radically different from the ones we had seen in other films. The crew created a “living, breathing thing” through a blend of practical and special effects.

Trachtenberg will direct, with writer Patrick Aison (Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan) penning the script. The film stars Amber Midthunder (Hell or High Water), Dane DiLiegro (American Horror Stories), and Stefany Mathias (Pathfinder). Marc Toberoff, Ben Rosenblatt, and Lawrence Gordon will executive produce. John Davis, Marty P. Ewing, John Fox, and Jhane Myers will produce.

Another thing the Prey director did with the film created the first streaming exclusive feature-length to be available in Comanche. The film is shot in English with some Comanche. In the language settings, viewers can switch to a Comanche dub, which was dubbed by the cast in the film.

Prey releases on Hulu on August 5.
