Doctor Stephen Strange is not the current Sorcerer Supreme. In fact, he’s not even alive. That title goes to Doctor Strange’s wife, Clea Strange. She was recently introduced in the Marvel Cinematic Universe during a mid-credits scene in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, played by Charlize Theron. Concurrently, she plays a large role in Marvel comics with her own title, Strange, written by Jed Mackay. After Stephen Strange died saving the Marvel Universe, Clea promptly began searching for a way to bring him back. The X-Men’s Cyclops (X-Men #12) recently disclosed to Ben Urich of the Daily Bugle that the X-Men have a way to resurrect fallen allies. The one catch is that it only works on mutants. When Clea arrives at the Hellfire Gala asking for help to bring her husband back, Emma Frost says, in no uncertain terms: NO.
Why Was Doctor Strange’s Wife At The Hellfire Gala, And What Happened?
The moment Urich’s article about mutant resurrection went live, the gala’s guest list increased by the dozens. Tony Stark saw the headline and was quick to “un-cancel” his invitation. Steve Rogers read the article on his motorcycle outside a diner and made the decision to return to the soirée. Clea Strange read the headline over her morning coffee in the Sanctum Sanctorum. She immediately believes she has found an easy answer to her husband’s death, saying:
She tracked down Emma Frost, a member of Krakoa’s Quiet Council, and wasted no time asking for her help resurrecting her husband. Well, she didn’t actually get to the question. Clea wasn’t so subtle in her introduction, and Emma saw the question looming a mile away. Emma responded with:
After giving Clea some advice about retaining her title as Sorcerer Supreme, Emma immediately dismisses Mrs. Strange without entertaining the notion any further. She has other guests to entertain, all with similar questions.
