The trailers for The Batman have revealed a gritty, brutal interpretation of the character and Gotham itself. Now, Robert Pattinson has revealed more information on what fans can expect from his version of Batman. According to Premiere Magazine, Robert Pattinson said that this Batman would follow the moral code where he doesn’t kill any of his enemies.

While Batman will be following this moral code, he will still be putting lots of criminals in a lot of pain. In fact, Pattinson suggests that this version of Bruce Wayne/ Batman will be a bit of a sadist, actually enjoying the pain that he is inflicting.

The character of Batman has always dealt with this moral code not to kill people. In The Dark Knight trilogy, Bruce Wayne (Christian Bale) constantly struggled with the decision to spare lives, and The Joker would have sacrificed his own life if it meant that Batman broke his one rule. In Batman: Arkham City, Batman (Kevin Conroy) reveals that he would’ve given Joker (Mark Hamill) the antidote that would have saved his life, to which Joker responded by saying, “that actually is pretty funny.”

There have been some versions of Batman that didn’t follow this code. Most recently, Ben Affleck’s Batman in Zack Snyder’s universe seemed to kill people with ease, not even feeling guilty about it. Batman has also been mocked over his decision not to kill. In the most recent episode of Peacemaker, Peacemaker asks the question of how many innocent people Batman has allowed to die by not killing bad guys and getting them off the street forever. There are a lot of interesting discussions to be had about Batman’s decision, but his moral code has been one that many fans have clung to. The fact that Batman can deliver justice without anyone dying, mostly, is honorable, even if it leads to mixed results.

The Batman will fly into theaters on March 4.
