After finding success, Top Gun: Maverick flies back to IMAX for select screenings. Now, audiences who missed out on getting the most out of the spectacle have a chance starting this Friday to see the Tom Cruise film on the biggest screen imaginable.

The main reason to see Top Gun: Maverick in IMAX is for its sense of realism. Director Joseph Kosinski (Tron: Legacy) put cameras into real F-18 fighter jets for you to fully experience what it is like to perform aerial maneuvers in a fighter jet. This direction aligns with Cruise’s sense of having practical effects and performing action sequences with as much realism as possible by limiting CGI to only where it is necessary.

Kosinski spoke to Collider about how Top Gun: Maverick in IMAX is the best way to view it.

Overperforming as the Box Office Brings Top Gun: Maverick Back to IMAX

The trend of putting out sequels to older films, like making a sequel to 1986′ Top Gun, managed to work out. Top Gun: Maverick, IMAX, and normal screenings carried it to become a monster at the box office. Its worldwide gross is currently at $913 million, making it Cruise’s biggest success. The split is $486 million domestic and $427 million international. It has not stopped either, as in the last three days (June 20-23), it grossed over $19 million domestic.

You can see Top Gun: Maverick in IMAX this weekend. The film stars Cruise, Miles Teller, Val Kilmer, Jennifer Connelly, and Jon Hamm. It is directed by Kosinski and written by Christopher McQuarrie (Mission: Impossible – Fallout, Rogue Nation), Eric Warren Singer (American Hustle), and Ehren Kruger (Dumbo).
