Pixar has released the full trailer for Turning Red, their next film which will be a different kind of coming-of-age story. Turning Red follows a young girl named Mei, who is a hyper and excited girl who is looking forward to the next year of middle school. However, one night, she discovers that she has a unique power. Whenever she becomes excited, angry, or overwhelmed with emotion, she turns into a giant red panda. This isn’t a figment of her imagination either. All of her friends and family can see her and she begins to cause a mess as she gets used to her new transformation.

While the first teaser trailer for Turning Red introduced us to this idea, this full trailer reveals the mystical connection her parents have to red pandas that gives Mei this connection. Mei does come to appreciate her new abilities, however, this could lead to trouble as one scene shows her getting so angry in her red panda form that she almost decapitates another classmate with a dodgeball. She does have a solid support group of friends, who share her love of a boy band named 4town, who will hopefully be able to help her through this challenging time. Boy bands may play a large role in this film as the trailer is set to N’SYNC’s “It’s Gonna Be Me.”

Turning Red is directed by Domee Shi, who also wrote and directed the Oscar-winning Pixar short Bao, and has worked on many other Pixar projects such as Inside Out and Toy Story 4. The cast includes newcomer Rosalie Chang as Mei Lee with Sandra Oh as Mei’s mother. The score will come from Ludwig Göransson, the Oscar-winning composer behind Black Panther and The Mandalorian.

Unlike the last two Pixar films, Soul and Luca, Turning Red is expected to be exclusive to theaters. Turning Red will hit theaters on March 11, 2022.
