Between hitting viewership milestones and going viral on social media, Jenna Ortega will be returning to her The Addams Family series. Netflix renewed Wednesday for season 2 today, after much waiting since the show premiered on the streamer on November 23.

The only bit about this that is surprising is that it took so long for the announcement. After a positive reception and huge numbers, Wednesday was primed to be renewed for season 2. The eight-episode series had the biggest first week for an English-speaking series on the streamer, with more than 341 million hours watched. Overall, it is the second biggest English language series in its first 28 days on Netflix, with 1.2 billion hours watched.

A part of the show’s success was its leading star. Ortega has become wildly popular from her appearance in season 2 of You and plenty of horror films from X to Scream. Putting her in an iconic role for a longstanding IP was a great setup for success. Add that to the viral dance that blew up on TikTok; it ended up being the perfect mix of ingredients for Netflix to find a successful show after controversial decisions of axing various shows, like The Midnight Club and, recently, 1899.

Wednesday renewed for season 2 at Netflix after huge viewership numbers

Season 2 of Wednesday will continue Ortega’s adventures of the titled character. The first season followed her in a story that mixed a coming-of-age high school story as she learned her psychic powers while also being a murder mystery.

The first season has set the bar for Wednesday season 2 in terms of its reception. It received modest reviews from critics as it has a 71% on Rotten Tomatoes. Audiences liked it more with 86%, but what both sections could agree was Ortega continues to be a force of nature. In The Nerd Stash’s four-star review, Eddy Skripko found it to be a charming, fun ride.
