Westworld and The Nevers are being pulled from HBO Max. According to Variety, the two recently canceled sci-fi shows are being taken off the streaming service. The Nevers, created by Josh Whedon, aired Part One of its first season in the Spring of 2021. Part Two was set for release in 2023, but with the show now canceled, the remaining episodes may air somewhere else than HBO or HBO Max. Westworld was canceled in November, just months after the season four finale aired. With both shows being canceled so abruptly and with both shows leaving the platform, there is a possibility that fans will never get a real conclusion to the stories.

Westworld and The Nevers are only the most recent shows HBO Max is axing. On Monday, it was announced that two original shows (Minx and Love Life) were canceled. The platform also pulled six movies off its platform, and numerous projects were canceled either pre or mid-production (i.e., The Wonder Twins and Batgirl). All of these cuts are happening for numerous reasons. Such reasons include cost-cutting, decluttering, the eschewing of family content, and the upcoming HBO Max and Discovery+ merger into a new streaming service that will debut in 2023.
While these changes and cuts may make sense from a business perspective, they’ve frustrated many fans with HBO Max. While Westworld’s fanbase and acclaim have declined since the first season, the show still had a following. And while The Nevers is doomed to have only one season, the show was well-received by fans, who are likely hoping it will find a home elsewhere.
Westworld and The Nevers may be done on HBO and HBO Max. But they may find a home on another network. Or perhaps they will get the movie finale treatment that Firefly got. For now, though, it appears both shows are going out without a real conclusion.
